In Focus… Fossil plants and fish
20 Feb 2012 - 15 Feb 2013
'In Focus...' exhibitions are small temporary displays exploring elements of the museum and gallery collections in detail.
Fossils are commonly found in the British Isles, but some are more common than others. This small exhibition examines a selection of British fish fossils from our collections, looking at how and when certain fish lived and how they are the ancestors of the fish swimming in our rivers, lakes and oceans today.
The exhibition also explores a selection of the fossilised traces of plants and leaves from the collections, many beautifully preserved and unchanged over the millennia from the examples we see today. Some of these plant remains belonged to giant swamp-dwelling trees which existed over 500,000 years ago.
